Saint Andrew, Apostle

On November 30th, the Church honors Saint Andrew, the first disciple called by Jesus. A fisherman from Bethsaida, Andrew recognized Jesus as the Messiah and immediately followed Him, bringing his brother, Simon Peter, along. This act of discipleship is commemorated annually on his feast day.

Saint Andrew's Feast Day marks the beginning of the Advent season, inviting families to reflect on the call to follow Christ. The day is observed with special liturgical services, including the Eucharist and prayers, and is a time to reflect on the virtues exemplified by Saint Andrew, such as his dedication and courage in the face of persecution.

Saint Andrew, brother of Simon Peter, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. According to the Gospel of John, he was a disciple of John the Baptist before following Jesus. Recognizing Jesus as the 'Lamb of God,' Andrew brought his brother to Jesus, leading to their call as 'fishers of men.'

Tradition holds that Andrew preached in regions around the Black Sea and was martyred in Patras, Greece, around 60 AD. He was crucified on an X-shaped cross, which has since become his symbol. His relics were later transferred to Constantinople and then to Amalfi, Italy, where they are venerated.
