Saint Clare, Virgin

Saint Clare of Assisi, born Chiara Offreduccio on July 16, 1194, was a noblewoman from Assisi, Italy. Moved by the preaching of Saint Francis, she left her affluent life to follow his example of poverty and devotion. In 1212, at the age of 18, Clare joined Francis and his followers, adopting a simple habit and dedicating herself to a life of prayer and service.

Clare founded the Order of Poor Ladies, later known as the Poor Clares, emphasizing strict poverty and contemplative life. She wrote their Rule of Life, the first monastic guidelines known to have been written by a woman. Her deep faith and commitment to poverty led to miracles, including one where she protected her convent from invading soldiers by holding up the Blessed Sacrament. She died on August 11, 1253, and was canonized in 1255.
