Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Priest and Martyr

On April 24, the Church commemorates Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen, a Capuchin friar and martyr who lived in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Born Mark Roy in 1577 in Sigmaringen, Germany, he was renowned for his deep faith, commitment to the poor, and zealous preaching against heresy. His dedication led him to serve as a missionary in Switzerland, where he was martyred in 1622 for his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith.

Saint Fidelis, originally named Mark Roy, was born in 1577 in Sigmaringen, Germany. After studying law and philosophy, he became known as the 'poor man's lawyer' for his dedication to defending the oppressed. In 1612, he joined the Capuchin Order, adopting the name Fidelis, and was ordained a priest. His missionary work took him to Switzerland, where he fervently preached against Calvinism, aiming to bring souls back to the Catholic Church. On April 24, 1622, while preaching in Seewis, he was attacked and killed by Calvinist soldiers, becoming the first martyr of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith.

His canonization in 1746 and his status as the patron saint of Sigmaringen and the Hohenzollern region highlight his enduring legacy. The annual celebration of his feast day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for the faith and the importance of standing firm in one's beliefs.
