History

Life and Legacy of Saint Francis de Sales

Born into a noble family in 1567, Francis de Sales pursued studies in law and theology, eventually becoming a priest against his father's wishes. He was consecrated Bishop of Geneva in 1602 and dedicated his life to re-evangelizing regions lost to Calvinism, notably the Chablais area. His gentle and patient methods led to the conversion of many.

In 1610, he co-founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary with Saint Jane Frances de Chantal, focusing on visiting and assisting the poor. Francis de Sales passed away in 1622, and his feast day is celebrated on January 24th, the day of his burial in Annecy in 1624.
