Life and Legacy of Saint Joseph Calasanz
Born in Peralta de la Sal, Spain, Joseph Calasanz was ordained a priest in 1583. In 1592, he moved to Rome, where he was deeply moved by the plight of poor children lacking education. In 1597, he opened Europe's first free public school, laying the foundation for the Piarist Order, which focused on educating the youth, especially the underprivileged. Despite facing opposition and hardships, his commitment to education remained unwavering.
Pope Alexander VII cleared the name of the Piarist Order eight years after Joseph's death. He was beatified in 1748 and canonized in 1767. In 1948, Pope Pius XII declared him the 'Universal Patron of all Christian popular schools in the world.' His feast day was moved to August 25th in 1969, aligning with the anniversary of his death.
