Saint Scholastica was born in Nursia, Italy, around 480 AD. She and her brother, Saint Benedict, both pursued monastic lives, with Scholastica establishing a convent near his monastery. Their close relationship is highlighted by their frequent meetings and shared devotion to God.

According to tradition, their final meeting occurred in a small house near Monte Cassino. During this meeting, Scholastica prayed for a storm to prevent Benedict from leaving, allowing them to spend more time in spiritual conversation. The storm occurred, and three days later, Scholastica died. Benedict buried her in the tomb he had prepared for himself.
