A Prayer Before Mass (Saturday)
I beseech You, O Lord, through this sacred mystery of Your Body and Blood, by which we are nourished, purified, and sanctified in Your Church and become partakers of the one Supreme Divinity. Grant me Your holy virtues, that empowered by them, I may approach Your holy Altar with a clear conscience, so that these divine mysteries may bring me salvation and life. For You have declared through Your most holy and blessed lips: The Bread I will offer is My Flesh for the life of the world. I am the living Bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this Bread, he will live forever. O sweetest Bread, heal the taste of my heart, enabling me to savor the sweetness of Your love. Cure it of all ailments, that I may find no delight apart from You. O most pure Bread, full of every joy and flavor, which always refreshes us and never fades, let my heart feed on You, and may my innermost being be filled with the delight of Your taste. The Angels partake of You fully; let wandering humankind partake of You as per his capacity, that, strengthened by this nourishment, he may not grow weary on his journey. Holy Bread! Living Bread! Pure Bread! You who descended from heaven and bring life to the world, enter my heart and cleanse me from every imperfection of body and spirit. Come into my soul; heal and purify me within and without; be the shield and unceasing health of my soul and body. Drive away all enemies that lie in ambush; let them flee far at the sight of Your might, so that, fortified by You from without and within, I may reach Your kingdom along the straight path, where, not as now in hidden signs, but face to face, we will behold You; when You shall have returned the kingdom to God the Father, and shall be God All in all. Then will You satisfy me with Yourself in a marvelous fullness, so that I shall never again hunger or thirst for eternity. Who with the same God the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns forever.
