Advent Wreath Prayer

(The following are the prayers for the Advent wreath, which change weekly. They are recited while lighting each candle daily during the Advent season.) Week One: As the first candle is lit, we offer this prayer. Priest: Let us bow our heads in prayer. We earnestly implore You, O Lord, to awaken Your power and come to our aid, so that by Your protection we may be safeguarded and receive salvation from the perils that arise from our transgressions. Who lives and reigns forever and ever. All: Amen. During this initial week, one candle remains lit during mealtime, prayer, or at bedtime. Week Two: On the second Sunday, two candles are lit and allowed to burn as before. The prayer for this week is: Priest: Let us bow our heads in prayer. O Lord, grant that our hearts may be stirred to prepare for the coming of Your only Son, so that through His arrival, we might be deemed worthy to serve You with pure hearts. Through the same Christ our Lord. All: Amen. Week Three: On Gaudete, the third Sunday, three candles, including the rose candle, are lit. The following prayer is offered: Priest: Let us bow our heads in prayer. We humbly beseech You, O Lord, to heed our prayers; and by the grace of Your coming, illuminate our darkened minds. Who lives and reigns forever and ever. All: Amen. Week Four: On the fourth Sunday, all four candles are lit and allowed to burn as before. The prayer for this week is: Priest: Let us bow our heads in prayer. We beseech You, O Lord, to stir up Your might and come to rescue us; that the salvation, blocked by our sins, may be expedited by the grace of Your gentle mercy.
