Mother Teresa of Calcutta Novena - Day 3

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Memorare: Remember, O Most Gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known, that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen (mention request here…) Mother’s Devotion to the Poorest of the Poor: Mother Teresa was called the slum sister and her Missionary of Charity sisters take a fourth vow: “to devote themselves with abnegation to the care of the poor and needy who…live in conditions unworthy of the human dignity. Those who join this Institute, therefore, are resolved to spend themselves unremittingly in seeking out…even amid squalid surroundings, the poorer, the abandoned, the sick, the infirm, the dying…AND in performing any other similar apostolic works and services, however lowly and mean they may appear.” Mother and her followers wanted to be carriers of Christ’s love into the slums. She was always adamant that the Missionaries of Charity were neither medical personnel nor social workers. Their mission to the poor always had a spiritual component: “this [is] really the full meaning of the poverty of Jesus. He being rich became poor.” Prayer: Father, you charged us to care for the poor and Mother Teresa took you at your word. She spent herself bringing first the poor of Calcutta and then around the world, into our homes and consciences. May we always share her concern for not only the body but the soul and seek to give comfort in both ways to those who are in need.
