Prayer When Visiting A Grave
[This prayer may be used during a visit to the resting place of a loved one. The month of November, particularly on 'All Saints Day' and 'All Souls Day,' is traditionally a time for honoring graves, as is the anniversary of a person's passing.] All make the sign of the cross. The leader begins: Praise to God our Father, who has raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Blessed be God eternally. All respond: Blessed be God eternally. The following Scripture passages may be proclaimed: For we know that if our earthly body is destroyed, we have a structure from God, a home not fashioned by human hands, eternal in the heavens. [2 Corinthians 5:1] I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor present circumstances, nor future events, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creation has the ability to separate us from the love of God found in Christ Jesus our Lord. [Romans 8:38-39] After a period of silence, all may join in intercessory prayers. Prayer of Intercession Jesus assured us of his presence when we call upon his name. Trusting in his assurance, we say: R. Stay with us, Lord. Hopeful certainty in the promise of your faithful departed: R. Stay with us, Lord. Faithful companion in moments of sorrow and uncertainty: R. Stay with us, Lord. Voice of calm for anxious hearts: R. Stay with us, Lord. Light of hope amid shadows: R. Stay with us, Lord. Compassionate Redeemer and source of mercy: R. Stay with us, Lord. Enduring support for all who grieve: R. Stay with us, Lord. Gentle solace for your pilgrim flock: R. Stay with us, Lord. Let us pray as Jesus has instructed us: Our Father... Leader: Lord God, whose days are endless and whose mercies are immeasurable, help us to remember that life is fleeting and the hour of our death is uncertain. Guide us by your Spirit throughout our earthly journey in the paths of righteousness and holiness, that we may serve you in unity with your Church, sure in faith, strong in hope, perfected in love. And when our journey here concludes, may we enter your kingdom rejoicing, where you live forever and ever. R. Amen. V. Grant eternal rest to them, O Lord, R. and let everlasting light shine upon them. V. May they find peace in rest. R. Amen. V. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through God’s mercy, find rest in peace. R. Amen. May the love of God and the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ bless and comfort us and gently wipe away each tear from our eyes: in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. R.Amen.
