Twelve Days Of Prayer For The Holy Souls

novena
The prayer

Eternal God, holy Lord, Father and Guardian of all creation, we lift our hearts to You this day for those who have departed from this earthly life. In Your loving compassion, dear Father, kindly welcome them into Your heavenly realm, and pardon the shortcomings and sins they may have committed in their human frailty. Your only Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ, endured profound suffering to free them from eternal separation. Through His merits, may they partake in the glory of His triumph over sin and death. We pray for all the deceased faithful, especially for those who are dear to us: parents, relatives, and friends. We also remember all who have shown us kindness, who aided us through their prayers, their sacrifices, and their good examples. We do not forget those who may have wronged us, and who particularly require Your mercy. May the intercession of our Virgin Mother, Mary, and of all Your angels and saints, speak on our behalf and assist them at this time. We ask this in the name of Christ. Amen. - - - - - - - - Day 1 Blessed are those who grieve, for they shall be comforted. [Mt. 5:5] REFLECTION: The sorrow of loss is challenging to endure. Let us seek solace in God, the Source of Life, for comfort and consolation during our grief. Every trial from God carries a greater purpose. For our sake, remember, He did not spare His only Son. PRAYER: O Lord God, have mercy on us and on the souls of our dearly departed, and ease our grief. Through the sufferings of Christ, our Savior, in His agony and passion, show mercy to all our loved ones. Guide us toward a stronger faith in Your goodness. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed find peace. - - - - - - - - - - Day 2 From the depths, I cry out to You, O Lord! Lord, hear my pleas! Let Your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. [Ps. 130:1-2] REFLECTION: Let us remember the souls undergoing the purification of their earthly flaws. They experience the pain of separation from God, yet are comforted by the assurance of their salvation. God's beauty captivates them, even as the burden of their unworthiness weighs heavily. They are in need and call out to us for help. PRAYER: Have mercy, O Lord our God, on all who await the joy of Your presence. Pardon their transgressions, and in Your kindness, call them soon to You. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed find peace. - - - - - - - - - - Day 3 Have mercy on me, have mercy on me, my friends, for the hand of God has pressed upon me. [Job 19:21] REFLECTION: Through the offering of Mass and our dedication to prayer and good deeds, we assist those dear to us who may still dwell in purgatory. The ones we help on their final journey home to God will always remember our aid in their time of need. PRAYER: Lord, our God, may the merits of Jesus Christ, the intercessions of His virgin Mother, and of all the saints be our advocates and support those who patiently long for the vision of Your glory. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed find peace. - - - - - - - - - - Day 4 We want you to know clearly about those who have passed away, so you do not grieve for them like those who lack hope. [1 Thess. 4:12] REFLECTION: We can always feel connected to those we love who have died when we draw nearer to Christ. We aid them most effectively by leading a devout life, by offering Mass for them, and by performing constant prayer and good works in their memory. PRAYER: Help us, Lord our God, to honor and support our beloved dead by faithfully fulfilling Your will each day. May the merits of our Lady and the saints assist us in doing so. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed find peace. - - - - - - - - - - Day 5 It is a good and wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be released from their sins. [2 Machabees 12:45] REFLECTION: How easily and humanly we can forget, with time's passage, those we cherished while they lived! We should pray for them frequently, in gratitude for their kindness towards us, and the good examples they provided in times past. PRAYER: Come to our aid, O God, and enable us to pray faithfully for our departed loved ones. By Your grace, help us honor their memory through a virtuous Christian life so that we may joyfully reunite with them in Your holy presence. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed find peace. - - - - - - - - - - Day 6 In the sight of those who lack wisdom, they appeared to perish, but they are in peace. [Wis. 3:3] REFLECTION: God loves our departed dearly, far beyond our capability. He summoned them home at the right moment because it was best for them and for us. Take comfort in knowing they are now secure in His embrace where malice and torment can never reach them. PRAYER: O Lord our God, help us recognize Your loving plans in the trials and sorrows we face. Have mercy on our dearly departed whom we entrust to You, forgive their sins and shortcomings, and grant them eternal rest. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed find peace. - - - - - - - - - - Day 7 Open wide the gates of righteousness so that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord. [Ps. 118:19] REFLECTION: Those we treasured in life are nearer to us with God than they ever were on earth. A thin veil separates us from their new reality, in which they now dwell. Faith allows us to pierce that veil even though our physical eyes cannot see. We ought to pray for our dear dead with as much frequency as they pray for us. PRAYER: O Lord our God, reveal to us the truth of Your divine presence, and inspire us to pray often with faith for those we love who are now with You. With the merit our Blessed Lady gained by standing by Christ's cross, help us to embody patience, faithfulness, and love. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed find peace. - - - - - - - - - - Day 8 Our feet are now standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. Since the Lord our God dwells here, I pray for your joy. [Ps. 122:2, 9] REFLECTION: Those we love and who have passed on are as concerned for us as we should be for them. They now see the world for what it truly is, a preparation for the endless happiness they enjoy. They continually intercede for us. PRAYER: O Lord our God, through the prayers of our beloved dead, may we be protected from sin and troubles during our earthly journey, and may we always be ready to follow them home by faithfully obeying Your commands. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed find peace. - - - - - - - - - - Day 9 When the Lord returned the captives of Zion, it felt like a dream to us; then our mouths were filled with laughter and our tongues with song. [Ps. 126:1-2] REFLECTION: Let us take comfort in recalling the joy of our departed as they entered God's presence. They have received their heart's desire and with Him, everlasting joy. They await our joining them there. PRAYER: O Lord, our God, deepen our faith. Encourage us to frequently pray for the faithful departed who are still being purified, and to pray also to those already in the glory of Your presence. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed find peace. - - - - - - - - - - Day 10 We know that when our earthly tent is dismantled, we have a building from God, a dwelling immortal in heaven, not fashioned by human hands. [2 Cor. 5:1] REFLECTION: As we think and pray for those who have died and were close to us here on earth, we must remember the certainty that we will one day reunite with them. Now is the time to prepare. PRAYER: Be with us, Lord our God, on our journey here on earth. Guide us safely to the eternal home You have set aside for us. When our path is challenging, grant us a vision of the splendor of that heavenly home. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed find peace. - - - - - - - - - - Day 11 For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. [Phil. 1:21] REFLECTION: When we focus on God's will and long for His kingdom to come, we embody the promises of Christ. When God calls us home, our earthly tasks will conclude, and He will be our eternal fulfillment. PRAYER: Help us each day, O Lord our God, to approach our daily duties in the spirit of Christ, ever mindful, even when our efforts seem minor in the world’s eyes. Protect us from all evil, and strengthen us to pursue goodness, so that death, when it arrives for us, may lead us into everlasting life with You. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed find peace. - - - - - - - - - - Day 12 When this perishable being has embraced imperishability, and this mortal form has taken on immortality, then the Scripture will be fulfilled: Death is defeated in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? [1 Cor. 15:55] REFLECTION: Christ's Easter triumph over sin and death is our promise of a glorious existence ahead when "death shall cease to exist." PRAYER: May Your Holy Spirit always remain with us, O Lord our God, to keep us steadfast in Your word, and ever prepared by enduring with Christ to share His victory over sin and death.Amen.
