André Bessette

André Bessette was born on August 9, 1845, in Saint-Grégoire-d'Iberville, Quebec, Canada. His early life was marked by hardship; his father died in an accident when André was just 12 years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his siblings alone. Despite his tough upbringing, André showed an early inclination toward prayer and spirituality. He faced numerous challenges, including a delicate constitution, which led him to pursue a life in service to God rather than taking on a more arduous occupation.

In 1870, André joined the Congregation of Holy Cross as a brother. He was assigned to the College of Notre Dame in Montreal, where he worked as a porter, a role that involved welcoming guests and running various errands. Through his simple acts of service, Brother André became well-known for his humility and kindness. His genuine faith became a source of inspiration for those who met him, and soon, people began to seek him out for prayer and guidance.

As word of his deep faith spread, André gained a reputation for miraculous healings. Many reported experiencing physical and spiritual recoveries after praying with him. One of his most notable contributions was fostering devotion to Saint Joseph. André believed that Saint Joseph was his protector and advocate, and he encouraged others to turn to the saint in their own times of need. His devotion led to the creation of the Oratory of Saint Joseph in Montreal, which he started in 1904. This remarkable basilica would become one of the most visited shrines in North America, attracting pilgrims from around the world.

Throughout his life, André often credited his miracles to the power of God working through him rather than to his own actions. He would frequently remind those who approached him that he was merely an instrument of divine grace. His humility and sincerity endeared him to many, and even the skeptics were touched by the profound faith he exhibited.

André's health began to decline in the late 1930s, yet he continued to serve the community until his passing on January 6, 1937. He had spent over 50 years in religious life, dedicating his entire existence to God and to serving the people around him.

Brother André was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 17, 2010, recognizing the significant impact of his life and work. His legacy continues to inspire countless individuals seeking solace in faith and healing in their lives.
