Andrés Solá y Molist

Andrés Solá y Molist was born on February 17, 1834, in the small town of Alcossebre in Spain. He was raised in a devout Catholic family, which instilled in him a deep love for the faith from a young age. Andrés pursued his education at the seminary in Madrid, where he developed a strong desire to serve God and the Church, potentially fueled by stories of the saints and missionaries who had gone before him.

In 1856, at the age of 22, Andrés was ordained a priest. Filled with zeal for missionary work, he joined the congregation of the Congregation of the Mission, commonly known as the Lazarists, founded by St. Vincent de Paul. This religious order focused on evangelizing and serving the poor, both in urban and rural missions. Andrés was determined to take the Gospel to the most neglected and spiritually impoverished regions.

In 1870, he responded to a call for missionaries in Mexico, a country rife with challenges such as political unrest and social upheaval, particularly in the wake of the Reform War and the Cristero War. Upon arrival, he immersed himself in the local culture and quickly established himself as a compassionate and devoted spiritual leader. He traveled extensively throughout various states, dedicating himself to the pastoral care of the people, establishing missions, and promoting social justice initiatives.

One of his significant contributions was his commitment to education. Andrés recognized that an educated populace was crucial for the growth of the faith and the betterment of society. He founded schools and catechetical programs that not only taught the Catholic faith but also encouraged moral and ethical development among the youth. His work greatly impacted the communities he served, and he became a beloved figure in Mexico.

Throughout his ministry, Andrés faced numerous challenges, including opposition from those who were anti-Catholic. Yet, despite the difficulties, he remained steadfast in his mission to spread divine love and truth. His dedication was exemplified by his willingness to suffer physical hardships and even persecution for the sake of the Gospel.

In 1911, after years of toil and selfless service, Andrés fell ill. His health quickly declined, and he passed away on April 25, 1915, in the city of Mexico. Even in his final days, he continued to instruct and comfort those around him, embodying the essence of a good shepherd.
