Angela Merici

Angela Merici was born around 1474 in Desenzano, Italy, into a well-to-do family. Orphaned at a young age, she developed a keen spiritual life influenced by her surroundings and deep faith. She received her education from the Franciscan community, which instilled in her a strong commitment to her faith and the importance of education.

At the age of 20, Angela experienced a significant spiritual revelation while on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. This encounter deepened her desire to dedicate herself to God's service. She returned home and lived a life of penance and prayer, ultimately becoming a laywoman who felt called to address the spiritual and educational needs of girls in her community.

In 1535, after years of reflection and discernment, Angela founded the Company of Saint Ursula in Brescia. This groundbreaking order aimed at promoting the education of girls, emphasizing both academic learning and spiritual development. The Ursulines, as they came to be known, blended a rigorous curriculum with religious instruction, allowing young women to prepare for a life of faith and service.

Under Angela's leadership, the Ursuline order grew rapidly. She established schools and formed a community of women dedicated to teaching and mentoring young girls. Her innovative approach to education was a stark contrast to the norm at that time, where formal education for women was often neglected. Angela's model not only focused on academics but also fostered moral integrity and a deep relationship with God.
