Angela of Foligno

Angela of Foligno was born in 1248 in the city of Foligno, Italy, into a well-off family. Initially leading a life devoted to family and societal obligations, Angela's world changed after the death of her husband and her mother. These losses plunged her into a profound spiritual crisis, prompting her to seek a deeper understanding of life's true purpose. She began to explore the teachings of the Church with great intensity, leading her to a mystical experience that would forever alter her path.

In the early 1290s, Angela experienced a series of deep spiritual transformations. During these moments, she felt an overwhelming presence of God, which filled her with profound love and humility. One notable experience occurred while she was praying in a chapel dedicated to Saint Francis, where she felt a divine light envelop her, signifying her total surrender to God. This experience marked the beginning of her life as a mystic, allowing her to perceive the divine in all aspects of life.

Angela took to a life of penance, living simply and dedicating herself to prayer. She often withdrew from the distractions of the world to find solitude, where she could commune with God. In her writings, she emphasized the importance of humility, love, and the need for a personal relationship with God. Her reflections reveal her deep understanding of God’s mercy and compassion, urging others to embrace a more profound spiritual life.

In 1291, she began to share her spiritual insights with others, inspiring many to follow a similar path. Angela of Foligno was canonized by Pope Benedict XIV in 1796, recognizing her contributions to mysticism and spirituality within the Church.
