Anna Rosa Gattorno

Anna Rosa Gattorno was born on April 24, 1831, in Genoa, Italy, into a devout family. Even as a child, she exhibited a deep compassion for others, often helping those in need. After her family faced the tragic loss of her father, Anna was inspired to dedicate her life to God and service.

In 1855, Anna Rosa founded a school for girls in her hometown, believing firmly in the importance of education for women. This was a radical endeavor for her time, as many girls were often denied access to formal education. Idyllically situated near the port, the school became a haven for many young women, providing them not only with academic knowledge but also instilling a sense of faith and moral values.

Anna Rosa’s commitment to education extended beyond the classroom. She founded the Institute of the Daughters of the Immaculate Conception, a religious community dedicated to teaching. This community grew rapidly, and her unique pedagogical approach garnered the attention of many, leading to the establishment of schools across Italy.
