Anselm, Duke of Friuli

Anselm, Duke of Friuli, was born around 750 in a noble family in what is now northern Italy. His early life was characterized by privilege and wealth, being part of the Frankish nobility during the period of Charlemagne. However, Anselm felt a profound call to dedicate his life to God, leading him to abandon his noble status and pursue a life of religious devotion.

He entered the Benedictine monastic community at the Abbey of Nonantola, where he embraced the monastic way of life, emphasizing prayer, community living, and service to others. His commitment and piety did not go unnoticed, and he was eventually elected as the abbot of the abbey around 803.
