Antoni Perulles i Estivill

Antoni Perulles i Estivill was born in Spain on December 6, 1876, into a humble family. As a child, he displayed remarkable piety and a strong inclination toward the spiritual life. His family instilled in him a deep sense of faith, and from an early age, Antoni felt called to the priesthood. This calling became undeniable, leading him to pursue studies for the priesthood at the seminary, where he thrived academically and spiritually.

He was ordained a priest on July 24, 1904, in the Archdiocese of Barcelona. Antoni immediately dedicated himself to pastoral work, particularly focusing on the needs of the poor and marginalized in his community. His fervor for evangelization endeared him to many. He believed that true ministry was not just about preaching but also about fostering a genuine connection with the laity, especially those who felt alienated from the Church.

During the early years of his ministry, Antoni often visited the sick, the elderly, and those facing various hardships. His empathetic nature allowed him to become a beacon of hope. With the onset of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Antoni faced significant challenges. The political climate grew increasingly hostile towards the Church, and many clergy members were persecuted. Despite the danger, he remained resolute in his commitment to his ministry. Antoni continued his work with unwavering faith, even as his community faced great turmoil and uncertainty.

Tragically, on August 12, 1936, he was arrested by anti-religious militants during the height of the conflict. Antoni was martyred for his faith, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless clergy throughout history. His last words were reportedly a prayer for forgiveness for those who had captured him.

Antoni's legacy lives on, especially in his home diocese, where he is remembered not only as a martyr but also as a model of compassion and dedication to the gospel. His life story continues to inspire new generations of Catholics to embody the virtues of faith, service, and love in their own communities. His beatification process has been initiated, acknowledging his role as a devout priest who stood firm in his convictions during one of Spain's most challenging periods.
