Antonietta Meo

Born on December 15, 1930, in Rome, Italy, Antonietta Meo, affectionately known as “Nennolina,” was the third of four children in a loving family. Her parents, together with her siblings, fostered a warm and nurturing environment that contributed to her vibrant spirit and joyful disposition. From a young age, Antonietta displayed exceptional faith, often engaging in acts of prayer and devotion that belied her tender years.

At the age of 4, Antonietta was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a painful bone cancer that would ultimately lead to her premature death. Throughout her illness, she exhibited a remarkable strength and deep trust in God. Instead of succumbing to despair, she drew closer to her faith, using her suffering as an opportunity to express her love for Jesus. Her parents were often amazed at how, even in pain, she would comfort them, encouraging them not to worry.

Antonietta's deep devotion was evident through her daily prayers and the sacrifices she willingly made, often offering her sufferings to God. She would frequently speak of her desire to become a saint and to help others through her prayers. In one of her texts, she wrote, “I love you, Jesus, I love you so much.” This simple yet profound declaration illustrated the depth of her relationship with Christ, which began at a very young age.

In her short life, Antonietta also nurtured a special bond with the Virgin Mary, often expressing a devotion that beckons all children to lean on her intercession. At only 6 years old, she made an important decision to give her life to God, a choice that showed her maturity in faith far exceeding her years. She participated actively in the sacraments of the Church, receiving Communion and frequenting confession, which she cherished greatly.

Antonietta passed away on July 3, 1937, just a few days after her seventh birthday. Yet, her legacy endured far beyond her brief earthly journey. Her story became a source of inspiration for many, portraying the purity and simplicity of faith that children can have. As her life was shared widely, it sparked a movement that encouraged not just children, but families to cultivate a deeper relationship with God.

Since then, Antonietta has been recognized for her contributions to demonstrating childlike faith in the modern world. Her intercession has been sought by many, particularly for children who are ill. In 2010, she was declared Venerable by the Vatican, bringing her one step closer to sainthood. The Church honors her as a model of innocence and a reminder of the powerful faith that can dwell within a child’s heart.
