Arnold Janssen

Arnold Janssen was born on November 5, 1837, in Goch, a small town in the Rhineland region of Germany. He was the third of eleven children in a devout Catholic family, which instilled in him a strong faith from a young age. His early education took place in the local parochial school, where he exhibited a keen intellect and a passion for learning. Inspired by the missionary efforts of the Church, Arnold felt a call to serve God more intensely as he matured, eventually deciding to enter the seminary. He was ordained a priest on August 15, 1861, and began his pastoral work, initially serving in various parishes.

As a priest, Arnold grew increasingly concerned about the lack of missionaries in the Church and the great need for evangelization, particularly in distant lands that had not yet heard the Gospel. His heart was stirred by stories of missionary endeavors, and he deeply desired to contribute to the spread of the Christian message. In 1875, convinced of his calling, he founded the “Society of the Divine Word” (SVD) in Steyl, the Netherlands. This community aimed to recruit and train missionaries who would travel to foreign lands to evangelize and serve local communities.

The early years of the Society were marked by struggles, as Arnold faced numerous challenges in establishing the new congregation. Securing financial support, recruiting members, and gaining permission from the Church hierarchy were significant hurdles. Yet, through steadfast prayer and determination, he persevered. By 1881, the Society had begun to grow, with its first missionary endeavors starting in 1879. Ultimately, the Society of the Divine Word expanded rapidly, establishing missions in various countries, including South America, Africa, and Asia.

Arnold's vision did not stop with the Society of the Divine Word; he later founded the “Sisters of the Divine Word” and the “Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters.” These congregations complemented the efforts of the SVD and helped to further the missionary work, especially in education and healthcare. His commitment to the formation of strong, missionary-minded laity was evident in his emphasis on establishing schools and providing training for all members of his congregations.

Janssen’s dedication to mission work was deeply interwoven with his spirituality. He believed that prayer was the cornerstone of effective evangelization. His devout life of prayer and his commitment to the Eucharist served as an inspiration to both his fellow priests and the laypeople he worked with. Arnold upheld the belief that all vocations are important in spreading the Gospel, and he fostered a sense of community among his members, emphasizing collaboration in their efforts.

Arnold Janssen’s later years were devoted to nurturing the growth of the communities he founded. His tireless work and relentless spirit resulted in the establishment of numerous missions worldwide. He faced challenges including illness in his later years, yet continued to lead his congregations with passion. Arnold passed away on January 15, 1909, in Steyl, and was buried in the cemetery of the Society of the Divine Word, which grew into a significant missionary center.

His legacy endures through the congregations he established, which continue to thrive and fulfill the mission of evangelization. The Sisters of the Divine Word and the Society of the Divine Word remain active in many parts of the world, committed to education, health care, and outreach to those who have yet to encounter the Gospel. Arnold’s life exemplifies a profound dedication to faith, missionary work, and the belief in the transformative power of God's love. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 5, 2003, and his feast day is celebrated each year on January 15, inspiring countless individuals to embrace a spirit of evangelization in their lives.
