Ascensión Nicol y Goñi

Ascensión Nicol y Goñi was born on January 24, 1868, in the Basque region of Spain. From a young age, she demonstrated a deep spiritual inclination and a strong desire to serve others. Her family instilled in her the values of charity and devotion to God, leading her to pursue a life dedicated to religious service.

In her early twenties, after experiencing a strong call to the religious life, she joined the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. During her time there, Ascensión was deeply moved by the plight of the poor and marginalized, which fueled her passion for social work. She dedicated herself to education and the care of orphans, believing that every child deserved love and guidance.

Recognizing the need for a more personalized approach to care and education, Ascensión felt called to establish a new religious congregation. In 1914, she founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in Madrid. Her vision was to create a community that would provide holistic education and nurture spiritual growth among children and families. She was not only a spiritual leader but also a pioneer in educational reforms, promoting values of love, respect, and dignity for all.

Under her guidance, the congregation grew rapidly, opening schools and homes for orphans and disadvantaged children across Spain and beyond. Ascensión’s commitment to social justice and education was profound; she believed it was through education that one could break the cycle of poverty and empower individuals to lead fulfilling lives.

Ascensión faced various challenges in establishing her congregation, including resistance from those skeptical of her innovative approaches and the realities of managing a growing community. However, her unwavering faith and dedication to God provided her with the strength to persevere. She trusted deeply in divine providence, often reminding her fellow sisters that their mission was rooted in love and service.

Throughout her life, Ascensión was known for her warmth, compassion, and commitment to those she served. Ascensión Nicol y Goñi passed away on May 8, 1940. Her legacy continues through the numerous schools and charitable works established by the Holy Family of Nazareth. She was beatified on November 16, 1986, by Pope John Paul II, further solidifying her impact on the Church and her dedication to serving others.
