St. Atilano Cruz Alvarado was born on November 24, 1887, in the village of San Vicente de los Reyes, Jalisco, Mexico. Atilano's refusal to abandon his faith led him to be a vocal opponent of the government’s oppressive measures. On March 31, 1927, while on his way to celebrate Mass in the parish of Santiago Papasquiaro, Durango, he was intercepted by government forces. He was arrested and taken prisoner, where he faced immense pressure to renounce his faith. But he remained unyielding, insisting on his loyalty to Christ and the Church.
On July 1, 1927, St. Atilano was executed brutally at the mere age of 39, becoming one of the many martyrs of the Cristero War. His last words were a powerful affirmation of his faith, and his martyrdom served to inspire countless others to stand firm in their beliefs despite persecution.
