Baltasar de Torres

St. Baltasar de Torres was born in 1592 in the Spanish town of Valls, Catalonia. Growing up in a devoutly Catholic environment, he was inspired early on by the teachings of the Church and felt a calling to serve God in a unique way. He joined the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and, after completing his studies, was sent on missions that would lead him to the far corners of the world, most notably to the Philippine Islands.

In 1627, Baltasar arrived in the Philippines, where he dedicated himself to the spiritual and temporal well-being of the local people. This was a time of great challenge in the Philippines due to the complexities of colonial politics and the cultural upheaval affecting the indigenous population. Yet, through his unwavering commitment to Christ, he engaged with the locals to educate them in the faith, teach them skills for making a living, and cultivate a sense of community among diverse groups.
