Bartolo Longo

Bartolo Longo was born on February 10, 1841, in Latiano, Italy. The son of a well-to-do family, he was bright and promising in his youth, but tragedy struck when his father died when Bartolo was just 11 years old. This loss profoundly affected him, and he struggled with despair and doubt. As a young man, he pursued studies in law, yet became increasingly disillusioned with life, wandering into a dark period marked by involvement with occult practices and associations with satanic influences.

In 1864, while studying in the city of Naples, Bartolo reached a turning point. Deeply troubled and filled with despair, he encountered a group of faithful individuals who were dedicated to the Rosary. Inspired by their spirituality, he decided to turn away from the darkness that had consumed him. He sought refuge in the arms of the Blessed Virgin Mary, embracing a life centered on prayer, particularly the Rosary. This decision was significant not only for Bartolo’s own life but also for countless others who would eventually be affected by his witness.

In 1871, Bartolo became a third-order Dominican and devoted himself to promoting the Rosary and the Virgin Mary’s role in the life of Christians. He began to devote his life to helping the poor and marginalized. He founded the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompei, which became a pilgrimage site and a significant center for Marian devotion. The Sanctuary would grow to become a symbol of hope and healing for many during difficult times, particularly for those facing despair as Bartolo once had.

Bartolo became known as a staunch advocate for the Rosary, emphasizing its power and the importance of prayer in seeking peace and reconciliation with God. His efforts in popularizing this devotion led to the establishment of numerous Rosary confraternities throughout Italy. People began to recognize the transformative power of prayer in their own lives, often testifying to the miracles and peace they experienced through invoking the Blessed Virgin Mary’s intercession.

Bartolo’s life was not only marked by his devotion but also by his commitment to education and social welfare. He established various schools and orphanages, providing education and care for the needy. His passion for social justice and the well-being of the less fortunate came from his own experiences of suffering and redemption.

His writings, too, reflect his deep spirituality and his commitment to inspiring others. Through pamphlets and lectures, he encouraged people to take up the Rosary and learn from Mary's humility and love. Bartolo’s teachings promoted a deeper understanding of the faith and were particularly centered on trust in Divine Providence.

St. Bartolo Longo passed away peacefully on October 5, 1926. He was beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II, who recognized not only his individual sanctity but also his contributions to the Church and society. Canonized in 1989, St. Bartolo is celebrated as a saint who teaches us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s mercy and that through prayer, particularly the Rosary, one can find healing and purpose.
