Bartolomea Capitanio

Bartolomea Capitanio was born on January 13, 1807, in the small town of Lovere in northern Italy. From an early age, she exhibited a profound sense of compassion and a strong desire to help those in need. Raised in a devout Catholic family, Bartolomea was deeply influenced by her parents’ faith, particularly the emphasis they placed on service to the poor and education. As she grew, her awareness of the struggles faced by the marginalized and her commitment to alleviating their suffering became a defining feature of her character.

After experiencing a life-changing event in her youth, Bartolomea felt a clear calling to dedicate her life to the service of God through active charity. It was in the context of societal upheaval during the early 19th century, where many were affected by poverty and social injustice, that her vocation came into focus. Inspired by her commitment to education and caring for the underprivileged, Bartolomea envisioned a community of women dedicated to these causes.

In 1832, Bartolomea, along with her close friend, servant, and future co-foundress, Giuseppina Della Croce, established the Sisters of Charity of Lovere. Their mission focused on empowering young women not only through education but also by instilling in them the importance of service. Their work was challenging; they faced societal skepticism and a lack of resources. Nonetheless, Bartolomea’s tenacity and unwavering faith helped her overcome these obstacles as she encouraged other women to join the mission.

Under Bartolomea's leadership, the congregation rapidly expanded its reach, providing education, health care, and spiritual guidance to the poor. The Sisters took on various forms of service, including teaching in parishes, visiting the sick, and working in orphanages. The convent became a nucleus for charitable work in the region, reflecting Bartolomea's vision of a community that lived out its commitment to Christian charity.

Bartolomea’s dedication to her mission was marked by deep personal sacrifice. She led a life of austere simplicity, often putting the needs of others before her own. Her humility and dedication to serving the less fortunate inspired those around her and contributed to the growth of the Sisters of Charity. She firmly believed that education was the key to upliftment and worked tirelessly to ensure that young women had access to it.

Despite her numerous accomplishments, Bartolomea faced significant health challenges throughout her life. She suffered from debilitating illnesses that often left her bedridden. Yet, she continued to inspire her community through her letters and by visiting the sisters whenever she could. She remained firm in her belief that her sufferings would contribute to the greater good of the congregation and those they served.

St. Bartolomea Capitanio passed away on July 26, 1833, just one year after the founding of the Sisters of Charity. Her legacy, however, did not end with her death. The community she founded continued to flourish, and her vision of charity in action had a profound, lasting impact on the Church and society.

In 1930, Bartolomea was beatified by Pope Pius XI, and she was canonized a saint by Pope Paul VI on November 18, 1976. Her feast day is celebrated on July 26, a testament to the enduring influence of her life and the mission she initiated. St. Bartolomea Capitanio is remembered not only as a foundress of a religious order but as a beacon of hope, a champion for education, and a model of loving service to others. Her life continues to inspire many, reminding us of the simplicity and power of selfless love.
