Berenguer de Peralta

Berenguer de Peralta was born in the late 12th century in the region of Catalonia, Spain, into a pious family. Very early in his life, he felt a profound calling to serve God, which led him to join the Order of Preachers, commonly known as the Dominicans. The Dominican life emphasized preaching and teaching, virtues that Berenguer embraced wholeheartedly.

As a friar, Berenguer dedicated himself to studying theology and scripture, becoming well-versed in the Catholic faith. His preaching missions took him throughout Spain, where he spoke passionately about the love of Christ and the importance of living a virtuous life. His eloquence and deep understanding of the faith drew many to his sermons, and he garnered a reputation as a devoted shepherd of souls.

In 1230, Berenguer was appointed as the bishop of the Diocese of Vilafranca del Penedès. His leadership was marked by a focus on pastoral care, leading his flock with compassion and attentiveness. Despite the challenges he faced—especially in a period marked by political turmoil and social strife—he remained committed to the duty of guiding his community in faith. He established numerous parishes and encouraged the spiritual development of the laity, fostering a robust sense of community among the faithful.

Throughout his life, Berenguer showed remarkable charity and concern for the poor. He often took it upon himself to provide for the sick and needy, establishing programs that would assist those less fortunate. His charitable works made a significant impact, enhancing the witness of the Church in his region. St. Berenguer’s commitment to education was also notable; he established schools to promote the study of theology and philosophy, encouraging both clergy and laity to deepen their understanding of the faith. Berenguer passed away on October 2, 1282, leaving behind a legacy that echoed through the ages. His canonization took place not long after his death.
