St Bernadine of Siena

Saint Bernardino of Siena, born Bernardino degli Albizzeschi on September 8, 1380, in Massa Marittima, was raised in a noble family where his father served as governor. Tragically, both of his parents passed away when he was young, leaving him in the care of his aunt. Even as a child, Bernardino demonstrated a remarkable piety and devotion to God, inspiring his peers to lead morally upright lives. This foundation set the stage for a life rooted in faith.

At the age of 22, Bernardino felt called to enter the Franciscan Order, taking his vows in 1402. He was assigned to preach, a task initially hindered by his weak voice. This difficulty could have dissuaded many, but Bernardino turned to prayer, seeking divine intervention. In a testament to his faith, his voice was miraculously restored, allowing him to become one of the most powerful and eloquent preachers of his time.

Bernardino's preaching events were often marked by his fervent devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus. He carried with him a tablet inscribed with the Christogram "IHS," surrounded by rays, which he used to emphasize his devotion and teachings. His colorful and persuasive sermons drew large crowds, prompting many to reflect on their lives and cultivate a deeper relationship with God.

In 1438, Bernardino was appointed Vicar General of the Observant branch of the Franciscans in Italy, where he worked tirelessly to reform the clergy and laypeople alike. He advocated for moral integrity and religious devotion, pressing for ethical behavior and authenticity in religious practice. However, in 1443, finding the administrative responsibilities pulling him away from his pastoral work, he resigned to return to preaching.

Bernardino faced significant challenges, including a turbulent period marked by a plague in Siena. During this crisis, he took charge of the La Scala hospital, selflessly caring for the ill at great personal risk. His commitment extended to nursing his aunt until her death, showcasing his compassion and unwavering dedication to those in need. Despite the demands on him, he remained resilient, turning his afflictions, including his earlier voice trouble, into a source of strength and inspiration.

On May 20, 1444, Bernardino died of natural causes in Aquila, in the Kingdom of Naples. His death marked the end of a life devoted to the service of God and the Gospel. Following his passing, he was beatified on November 24, 1449, and canonized by Pope Nicholas V on May 24, 1450. His feast day is celebrated on May 20th, allowing the faithful to remember his contributions and legacy.

Saint Bernardino is the patron saint of advertisers, public relations personnel, and those struggling with gambling addictions. His association with public speaking and promotion of moral behavior has made him a guiding light in these areas. His imagery often appears in sacred art, where he is depicted holding the "IHS" tablet, a symbol that has become widespread in Catholic art and architecture.
