Bernard Mary of Jesus

Bernard Mary of Jesus was born in 1676 in the town of Sant'Agata de' Goti, Italy, as the son of a well-off farmer. From a young age, he exhibited an intense spirituality, drawn to prayer and the contemplative life. His family noticed his inclination toward the religious and encouraged him in his devotion to God.

At the age of 17, Bernard felt a strong call to enter the monastic life. He chose to join the newly established Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ, better known as the Passionists, the order founded by St. Paul of the Cross. In 1694, he made his religious profession and took the name Bernard Mary. He spent his early years in the Passionist community deepening his relationship with Christ through prayer, study, and community life.

Bernard quickly became known for his profound spirituality and his commitment to the ideals of his order, which emphasized the Passion of Christ. His life was characterized by an ardent devotion to the suffering and love of Jesus. He spent countless hours before the Blessed Sacrament, often lost in contemplation and prayer. His deep love of God inspired those around him and energized his ministry.

During his time as a Passionist priest, Bernard was dedicated to preaching and providing spiritual guidance to those seeking to deepen their faith. He was known for his simplicity and humility, often demonstrating a deep compassion for the poor and marginalized. Bernard’s legacy did not end with his passing; he was canonized by Pope Pius IX in 1867, affirming his virtues and the profound impact he had on the Church. His feast day is celebrated on December 9, allowing the faithful to remember his life and draw inspiration from his devotion.
