Blessed Candlemas of San José

Blessed Candlemas of San José, whose birth name was Maria de la Luz Mendoza, was born on June 22, 1915, in the small Venezuelan town of La Victoria. From a young age, she exhibited a deep faith and a desire to help others. Inspired by the teachings of the Church, she felt a calling to serve the poor and dedicate her life to educational initiatives that would uplift families in her community.

In 1951, she founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, which aimed to provide a holistic education for girls and young women. Blessed Candlemas understood that education was key to breaking the cycle of poverty and worked tirelessly to ensure that her students received not just academic knowledge, but also a strong moral and spiritual foundation.

Her commitment to education went beyond the classroom. She established educational workshops for parents to empower them with parenting skills and encourage their active participation in their children’s development. Through her efforts, many families were strengthened and faith was deepened, creating a ripple effect of positive change throughout the region.

Blessed Candlemas faced numerous challenges in her mission, including financial obstacles and societal resistance to women in leadership roles. Nevertheless, her unwavering faith and determination kept her motivated. She prayed daily for guidance and support, and her prayers were often answered through the generosity of local donors who shared her vision.

Throughout her life, she demonstrated profound compassion and empathy, often visiting the poorest neighborhoods in Los Teques and surrounding areas, providing food, clothing, and spiritual support to those in need. Blessed Candlemas became a symbol of hope and love, and her ability to connect with those she served filled her with a joy that was contagious.

As her health began to decline in her later years, she continued to work passionately until her death on January 31, 1985. Her legacy lives on through the ongoing work of her congregation and the countless lives she touched. In recognition of her dedication and holiness, she was beatified on November 22, 2008, by Pope Benedict XVI.

Today, Blessed Candlemas of San José is remembered not only as a dedicated founder but also as a nurturer of faith and a champion for the poor.
