Columba Kang Wan-suk

Columba Kang Wan-suk was born in Korea in the early 19th century, a time when Christianity faced severe persecution. She came from a well-to-do family and was raised in the Catholic faith, which flourished despite the harsh realities of the Choson Dynasty. Her early life was marked by a profound sense of devotion, actively participating in her local parish and deepening her understanding of her faith.

As Columba matured, she demonstrated significant courage in sharing the message of Christianity with others, even in an environment hostile to her beliefs. The edict against Christians intensified in the 1830s, yet she remained undeterred, often attending underground Masses and receiving the Sacraments in secret. Her faith became evident not only through her own piety but also through her efforts to convert her friends and neighbors.

In 1839, the government launched a fierce crackdown on Christians, leading to numerous arrests, including Columba's. Despite the threats and the possibility of execution, Columba displayed remarkable fortitude. During her interrogations, she steadfastly refused to renounce her faith, often encouraging others around her to remain strong. Her unwavering commitment to Christ and her willingness to suffer for her beliefs marked her as a true martyr for the faith.

Columba's trial was held in 1840, where she faced brutal treatment as she maintained her resolve. The authorities attempted to intimidate her into recanting her faith, but she chose to endure suffering rather than betray her beliefs. On May 31 of that year, Columba was executed, becoming one of the many Christian martyrs who endured persecution during this tumultuous period.

Her legacy is significant, as she is remembered not only for her courage in the face of death but also for her deep compassion for others, even those who persecuted her. St. Columba's life encourages believers to hold fast to their faith and exhibit courage in adversity. She was canonized as a saint in 1984 by Pope John Paul II, alongside many other Korean martyrs, commemorating her unwavering devotion and the countless sacrifices made by Catholics in Korea. Today, she stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the strength of faith.
