Saint Corona, also known as Saint Stephana, is a beloved figure in both the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions, revered as a martyr who exemplified unwavering faith in the face of persecution. Although the historical details of her life remain sparse and mostly legendary, her story has been preserved through the ages, primarily as a tale of love, bravery, and sacrifice.

Traditionally believed to have lived during the 2nd century in Roman Syria, Saint Corona was a young woman around the age of sixteen. She was the young wife of a Roman soldier, and Saint Victor — the soldier martyred beside her — was her husband’s comrade in arms, not her husband. What the accounts agree on is their shared faith and her courage in professing it openly. When the ruthless Emperor Marcus Aurelius initiated widespread persecutions against Christians, Victor's steadfast adherence to his beliefs led to his arrest. Rather than renouncing his faith, he courageously faced torture and execution, a decision that ultimately put both his and her life in peril.

As the story goes, while Victor endured horrific suffering for his faith, Corona remained by his side, offering him comfort and encouragement. This act of selflessness and loyalty would cost her dearly; she was subsequently arrested for her faith as well. The accounts diverge on the specifics of her martyrdom, presenting a chilling image of a young woman tied between two bent palm trees. When the trees were released, they snapped back, leading to her tragic death. Over time, she became associated with various forms of veneration, particularly in European regions where her cult grew in prominence. She is traditionally invoked as the patron saint of treasure hunters, gamblers, and those engaged in money matters, due largely to the Latin word "corona," which means "crown." This metaphor extends beyond mere riches and treasures; it symbolizes the ultimate reward of faith—eternal life.

Her feast day is celebrated on May 14th, often in conjunction with that of Saint Victor. Regional shrines, such as the one in Aachen Cathedral, Germany, house her relics and continue to serve as pilgrimage sites, especially during challenging times. Such locations act as beacons of hope, drawing people to seek her intercession in their lives, particularly in financial concerns and, in more recent times, health-related crises led by the COVID-19 pandemic.

While there is no universally recognized iconography, these artistic interpretations emphasize her virtue and steadfastness.
