Elisabeth Hesselblad

Elisabeth Hesselblad was born on June 30, 1870, in Fågeltofta, Sweden, into a family of farmers. As a young girl, she experienced a deep-seated Catholic faith, nurtured by her mother, who emphasized the importance of education and compassion for others. Despite her humble beginnings, Elisabeth's strong spiritual convictions led her to pursue a deeper relationship with God.

At the age of 25, she moved to the United States in search of better opportunities and eventually settled in New York City. There, she became immersed in the vibrant Catholic community and began working as a nurse during World War I, tending to wounded soldiers and those in dire need. This experience profoundly influenced her sense of purpose and ignited her desire to serve the marginalized. During this time, she also joined the Third Order of St. Francis, embracing the Franciscan ideals of humility, service, and dedication to the poor.

Elisabeth felt a call to found a religious community that focused on caring for the neglect and poor, which led her to return to Sweden in 1915. With immense determination, she established the Congregation of the Order of St. Bridget, inspired by the teachings of St. Bridget of Sweden, who emphasized service, education, and the importance of community life. Elisabeth envisioned a congregation where sisters could work both in education and the care of the underprivileged, and as the leader, she emphasized a prayerful life grounded in Scripture and service.

Through her tireless efforts, Elisabeth established various institutions, including schools and health facilities, aimed at uplifting the poor and providing education to children. Her work extended beyond Sweden; she founded communities in the United States, Italy, and other countries, ensuring that her mission of service reached a broader audience.

Elisabeth faced criticism and challenges in her pursuits, particularly during the complicated backdrop of World War II. Yet, her resilience and unwavering faith led her to assist Jewish refugees, hiding them from the Nazis and providing shelter and support. Her courage during these trying times highlighted her dedication to living out the Gospel’s call to love and serve others, regardless of the consequences.

Elisabeth passed away on April 24, 1957, in Rome, Italy, where her legacy as a devoted founder and servant to the poor continued through her congregation. Her life was characterized by an unwavering commitment to education and the empowerment of those in need, which inspired countless others. In 2000, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II, and she was canonized a saint in 2016, affirming her profound impact on the Church and her embodiment of the Franciscan spirit of love and service.
