Eugene III

Eugene III, born Pietro or Peter from the noble family of the Savelli in Italy, became one of the pivotal figures in the 12th-century Church. He entered the monastic community of the Cistercians at the Abbey of Clairvaux, where he came under the guidance of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, a significant influence in his spiritual development. Eugene's commitment to a monastic life not only shaped his character but also laid the foundation for his future leadership in the Church.

In 1145, Eugene was elected pope, taking the name Eugene III. His papacy was an era marked by increasing challenges, both within Christendom and beyond, as the Muslim forces threatened the Holy Land. Understanding the gravity of the situation, Eugene III called for a Second Crusade in 1145, seeking to reclaim territories lost in the previous conflict and to provide support to the Christian states established in the East. However, the Crusade was met with numerous challenges and ultimately ended in disappointment, reflecting the complexities of religious and political motivation in his time.

Throughout his reign, Eugene III worked tirelessly to strengthen the authority of the papacy, often encountering resistance from secular rulers.
