Eugenia Ravasco

Eugenia Ravasco was born on January 20, 1819, in the town of Lendinara, Italy. From an early age, her heart was inclined toward the service of others, especially the poor and the orphaned children of her community. Growing up in a devout family, Eugenia was nurtured in the Catholic faith, which profoundly influenced her spiritual development and eventual vocation.

After completing her education, Eugenia began to devote herself to teaching in a local school. It was during this time that she recognized the pressing need for a more intensive and dedicated approach to the education and care of underprivileged children. The poverty and lack of opportunity that many children faced in the region troubled her deeply. Determined to make a difference, she sought to provide a foundation of hope and opportunity for the young souls entrusted to her care.

In 1845, responding to her calling, she founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Dorothy, an institute dedicated to the education of girls and the care of poor and orphaned children. Under her leadership, the congregation emphasized love, charity, and the importance of a solid education, believing that these elements would empower the children to find their way in the world. Her vision was both revolutionary and crucial, as it sought to uplift not just individuals but the community as a whole by fostering a sense of dignity among the marginalized.

Eugenia exuded a spirit of service that inspired her fellow sisters and the broader community. She devoted herself tirelessly to her mission, often working long hours to ensure that the schools were adequately staffed and resources were available for the children. Eugenia Ravasco’s legacy remains vibrant. The congregations she founded still operate today, continuing her mission of education and care, reaching thousands of children and families. Canonized as a saint in 2003, she stands as a beacon of hope and dedication, especially for those who serve the young and vulnerable in society. Her feast day is celebrated on December 30, a fitting tribute to her unwavering spirit and love for humanity.
