Euphrasia Eluvathingal

Euphrasia Eluvathingal was born on July 17, 1877, in the village of Kottayam in what is now India. From a young age, she felt a deep connection to God and a calling to live a life of prayer and service. Raised in a Christian family, she was inspired by the values of her parents, who emphasized the importance of faith and devotion. Her early experiences in prayer and community life laid the foundation for her future vocation.

At the age of 19, Euphrasia joined the Congregation of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), where she adopted the name Euphrasia. Her decision to embrace religious life was rooted in her desire to engage fully in a life dedicated to God and to serve others with humility and love. As a Carmelite sister, she devoted herself to a stringent schedule of prayer, manual labor, and community activities, living in accordance with the Carmelite tradition of deep contemplative prayer.

Euphrasia was known for her extraordinary commitment to her spiritual life. She spent many hours in quiet contemplation, often engaging in fervent prayer that sought to deepen her relationship with God. Despite the challenges of community life and the responsibilities she shouldered, she found joy in the simple routines of daily life, seeing every task as an opportunity to honor God.

Her humility and deep faith inspired her fellow sisters and the laypeople they served. Euphrasia had a special gift for encouraging others in their spiritual journeys, sharing her insights and providing guidance to those who sought her advice. Euphrasia passed away on August 29, 1952. Her legacy continues to be felt today, especially among the Carmelites and those who seek her intercession in prayer. In recognition of her virtuous life and the impact she made, she was canonized by Pope Francis on November 23, 2014. Saint Euphrasia serves as a model of faithfulness and devotion, inspiring countless individuals to deepen their relationship with God and live out their Christian calling. Her feast day is celebrated on August 29, a testament to her enduring influence as a devoted Carmelite sister.
