Joseph de Veuster, known as Father Damien, was born on January 3, 1840, in Tremelo, Belgium. Raised in a devout Catholic family, he was drawn to the priesthood from an early age. At the age of 19, he joined the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, taking his vows shortly after. His journey to Hawaii began in 1864 when he volunteered to go to the apostolic mission in the Hawaiian Islands.
Father Damien arrived in Hawaii and began ministering to the Catholic community. However, in 1865, the Hawaiian government established a leper colony on the remote island of Molokai. Leprosy, known then as Hansen's disease, was highly contagious and greatly feared, leading to the isolation of afflicted individuals from society. When they needed a priest, Father Damien courageously accepted the task of traveling to Molokai, fully aware of the dangers involved.
