Felix of Burgundy

Saint Felix of Burgundy was a bishop and missionary who played a significant role in the early Christianization of England. He was originally from the British Isles but traveled to East Anglia in the 7th century, responding to a fervent call to spread the Gospel among the Anglo-Saxons.

Felix arrived in East Anglia during a period of significant religious transition, marked by the efforts of kings and local leaders to adopt Christianity. He initially served under Saint Fursey, a fellow missionary who had previously founded a monastery in the region. After Fursey left, Felix took on a more prominent role in preaching and establishing churches.

Recognized for his eloquence and deep faith, Felix gained the trust of the local king, who saw the need for spiritual leadership among his people. Felix was appointed the first bishop of the newly founded see of Dunwich, which became the center of his missionary work. Throughout his ministry, he was known for his dedication to education and the growth of the Christian community, emphasizing the importance of instructing the laity in the faith.

Felix’s tenure was not without challenges. He faced opposition from some local pagan leaders who resisted the spread of Christianity. Nonetheless, he persevered, building churches and nurturing the faith among converts. His gentle approach and unwavering commitment earned him respect even from those who initially opposed him.

Felix's legacy continued through the communities he helped establish. His efforts laid the groundwork for future missionaries and the ongoing Christianization of England. Tradition holds that he died in 647 AD, and he was revered soon after his death for his steadfast faith and missionary zeal.
