St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen was born on December 4, 1577, in Sigmaringen, Germany, to a family of noble descent. His name at birth was Mark Roy. He studied law and became a successful lawyer, but he felt a strong calling to a religious life. After much discernment, he decided to leave his legal career and entered the Capuchin Order in 1604, adopting the name Fidelis, which means "faithful."
Fidelis devoted himself to a life of prayer and service, embracing the Capuchin ideals of poverty and simplicity. He was well-regarded for his eloquent preaching and tireless efforts to spread the Gospel, particularly among the Reformed communities in Switzerland.
