Francis de Geronimo

Francis de Geronimo was born on December 17, 1642, in Grottaglie, Italy. From a young age, he exhibited a profound devotion to God, which significantly influenced his direction in life. His family was deeply religious, and this environment nurtured his spiritual growth. In pursuit of a deeper commitment to his faith, he joined the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1660, a decision that would set him on a path of dedicated service to God and the Church.

After ordination in 1668, Francis focused on education and the spiritual well-being of the communities he served. His mission work began in earnest when he was sent to the Spanish-controlled territory of Naples, where he encountered the local people’s spiritual poverty. His passion for evangelization drove him to tirelessly preach to the poor and marginalized, particularly those living in the slums.

One of Francis's notable qualities was his ability to connect with people from various backgrounds. He would go to great lengths to ensure that everyone he encountered felt seen and heard.
