Their life

Who they were

Francis of Assisi was born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone in 1181 in Assisi, Italy, to a prosperous merchant family. As a young man, he enjoyed a life of luxury and revelry, often reveling in the company of fellow youths and dreaming of knightly exploits. However, during a military campaign in 1202, Francis was captured and spent a year in prison, a transformative experience that began to shift his perspective on life. Released, he fell gravely ill and, during his recovery, experienced a spiritual awakening that ignited a passion for God and service to others.

In 1206, while praying in a dilapidated church dedicated to St. Damian, he believed he received a divine command from Christ to rebuild His Church. This moment marked the beginning of his commitment to a life of poverty and humility. Francis renounced his family's wealth and embraced a life of simplicity, often preaching to those both affluent and poor. His love for nature and animals became prominent as he viewed all creation as a reflection of God's glory, frequently referring to the sun, moon, and even animals as his brothers and sisters.

As Francis’s following grew, he founded the Order of Friars Minor in 1209, seeking to live a life dedicated to the Gospel. The rule of life he established emphasized radical poverty, humility, and a commitment to peace. In 1223, he established the first Christmas crèche in Greccio, illustrating his desire to promote the message of Christ's birth and the love of God for humanity. Throughout his life, he preached travel through towns and villages, sharing the Gospel, healing the sick, and reconciling sinners. His compassionate spirit drew many to him, inspiring others to abandon worldly ties in their pursuit of holiness.

Francis’s dedication to peace was palpable, especially during a time characterized by conflict between Christians and Muslims. He famously traveled to Egypt during the Fifth Crusade to preach to the Sultan, advocating for peace rather than violence. His bold attempt reflected his entire being, striving for a world of love rather than war. He would pray for all people, even those who persecuted him, embodying his profound commitment to the teachings of Christ.

In his later years, Francis experienced physical suffering and illness, including a debilitating disease that left him partly blind. Despite these hardships, he embraced his suffering as a way to identify more closely with the Passion of Christ. He received the Stigmata, the wounds of Christ, in 1224 during a retreat on Mount Alverna, a powerful sign that marked him as a bearer of Christ's love in a unique way.

Francis of Assisi died on October 3, 1226, at the age of 44. His death sparked an outpouring of grief among those he had touched throughout his life, leading to his canonization by Pope Gregory IX just two years later in 1228. His legacy continued to flourish through the Franciscan Order, which expanded rapidly, emphasizing a life of humility, service, and love for creation. Today, Francis is remembered not only as a saint but as the patron saint of animals and ecology, symbolizing a life of peace and harmony with all living beings. His teachings and example challenge each generation to embrace a spirit of love and care for the world's creation, urging humanity to strive for a deeper relationship with God and the natural world.
