Francisco Coll Guitar

Francisco Coll Guitar was born on December 15, 1812, in the village of Balsareny, near Barcelona, Spain. From a young age, he demonstrated a keen intellect and a deep yearning for spiritual growth. Growing up in a deeply religious family, Francisco felt called to a life dedicated to the service of God and others, particularly in educating the youth. He entered the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1836.

In the backdrop of the tumultuous religious and political changes in Spain during the 19th century, Francisco recognized the critical need for educational and pastoral care for young people. This need became even more apparent with the separation of church and state in many regions and the growing threats against the Catholic educational institutions. Pioneering a movement to offer sound education grounded in Christian values, he founded the order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Montserrat in 1847, also known as the "Montserrats." His vision was to create an environment where children could grow in knowledge and faith, shaping their character and guiding them toward a life committed to God.

Francisco worked tirelessly to establish schools and institutions to educate the youth. His methods emphasized both intellectual rigor and the moral development of students, putting a special focus on imparting Catholic values. Recognized for his service and contributions to the church, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1989 and was later canonized on April 1, 2001. His feast day is celebrated on April 2, a reminder of his profound impact on Catholic education and the spiritual life of youth.
