Frei Galvão

Frei Galvão, born as Anthony Galvão de Franciscan in 1739 in Guaratinguetá, Brazil, was a member of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans). He entered the Franciscan order in 1759, dedicating his life to prayer, penance, and the service of others. From a young age, he exhibited a profound spirituality and zeal for God, which led him to pursue a life of religious fervor. He was ordained a priest in 1762, and his commitment to living the Gospel was evident in all aspects of his life.

Throughout his ministry, Frei Galvão became known for his unwavering faith and deep compassion for the poor. He often engaged in charitable works, helping those in need and offering spiritual guidance to his community. He founded the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament in São Paulo, which became a significant center of spirituality and service. The monastery became known for its dedication to both contemplative life and active ministry, embodying Frei Galvão’s vision of faith in action.

Frei Galvão's miraculous works significantly contributed to his legacy. Among his most remarkable miracles were healings attributed to his intercession. He is particularly remembered for the small packets of prayers he would prepare, which many claim to have experienced miraculous effects when used in faith. These "Saint Galvão pills," as they became known, are blessed with a prayer for healing and remain a symbol of hope for many in Brazil.

His life was marked by considerable trials and challenges, including periods of difficulty with local authorities and the struggles of the changing political landscape. In 1998, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II, and later canonized on May 11, 2007, making him the first Brazilian-born saint.
