Gaetano Errico

Gaetano Errico was born on February 19, 1790, in the small village of Secondigliano, near Naples, Italy. He grew up in a devout Catholic family, where the values of faith and charity were instilled in him from an early age. His parents, Domenico and Maria Errico, set a profound example of generosity and compassion, often helping the less fortunate in their community. These formative experiences laid the groundwork for Gaetano's future vocation and his unwavering commitment to serving those in need.

At the age of sixteen, Gaetano entered the seminary to pursue his goal of becoming a priest. He was determined to live out the Christian calling to love and serve others, particularly the marginalized and impoverished. After completing his studies, he was ordained a priest in 1815. Throughout his early priesthood, he engaged in various forms of ministry, offering both spiritual guidance and charitable assistance to those who sought his help. He was particularly drawn to the plight of the poor and the sick, often reaching out to them in their suffering.

Recognizing a pressing need for structured support for the most vulnerable, Gaetano founded the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in 1836. This religious community was devoted to the evangelization of the poor and the promotion of social justice, emphasizing the importance of education and health care. Under Gaetano’s direction, the congregation thrived, drawing in many like-minded individuals who shared his passion for serving the marginalized. They established schools, hospitals, and outreach programs that ensured those in need received not only material assistance but also spiritual support and education.

Gaetano's compassionate spirit was evident in his tireless work. He dedicated his life to visiting the sick and the afflicted, often traveling into the poorest neighborhoods of Naples. Gaetano Errico’s health began to decline in his later years, but he continued to minister to others until his final days. He passed away on October 29, 1860, in the city of Naples. His legacy, however, did not end with his death; the congregation he founded continued to grow and serve, expanding its mission to various regions over the years.

In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI canonized Gaetano Errico, recognizing his profound impact on the Church and society. Today, he is remembered not only for his dedication to the poor but also for his embodiment of Christ’s love and mercy. His feast day is celebrated on October 29, inviting the faithful to reflect on the importance of compassion, service, and charity in their own lives.
