George Preca

Saint George Preca was born on February 12, 1884, in Valletta, Malta. He grew up in a devout Christian family, which laid the foundation for his strong faith and commitment to the teachings of the Church. Recognizing his calling to the priesthood at a young age, he joined the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1906. His early years as a priest were spent in pastoral work, where he noticed a significant need for better catechesis among the faithful.

Motivated by this realization, George Preca understood that teaching the faith in engaging and relatable ways was essential. In 1907, he founded the Society of Christian Doctrine, also known as the “Dun Manġu,” which aimed to provide catechetical instruction for both children and adults. This innovative approach encouraged lay participation and fostered a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith.

Throughout his ministry, Preca worked tirelessly to develop programs that would resonate with the young and the old alike. He utilized the arts, storytelling, and various forms of media to communicate the message of the Gospel. His dynamic methods attracted many students, creating a vibrant community committed to learning and living out the teachings of Christ. After many years of fruitful ministry, George Preca passed away on July 26, 1962. His legacy continues to live on through the Society of Christian Doctrine, which remains active and influential in Malta and beyond. In recognition of his profound impact on catechesis and the Church, Preca was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on June 3, 2007, making him the first male saint from Malta.
