Giuseppe Toniolo

Giuseppe Toniolo was born on March 7, 1845, in Treviso, Italy, to a family that valued education and moral integrity. From an early age, he exhibited a deep passion for social justice, a calling that would define his life’s work. After receiving his early education in Treviso, Toniolo pursued higher studies at the University of Padua, where he earned a doctorate in economics and social sciences. It was during these formative years that he became acutely aware of the profound struggles faced by the working class and the poor, especially amidst the rapid industrialization that characterized 19th-century Italy.

Toniolo’s vocation to advocate for the marginalized began to materialize when he became involved in various Christian social movements. He believed that faith and social engagement should go hand in hand, reflecting the teachings of the Gospel in practical, transformative ways. His teaching career, which began in Venice, was characterized by a commitment to integrating moral principles into economic theories and practices. He used his position to educate young minds about the value of social justice, highlighting the dignity of every individual, particularly the disenfranchised.

In 1881, Toniolo played a crucial role in founding the Italian Society of Social Sciences, where he served as president for many years. A dedicated family man, Toniolo married Maria DeBiasio in 1875, and together they raised six children.
