Henriette de Jésus

Henriette de Jésus was born on November 18, 1811, in a small village near Lyon, France. The daughter of a wealthy family, Henriette was gifted with a deep faith and a compassionate heart from a young age. Her early life was marked by a fervent desire to serve God and the poor, which set the stage for her future mission.

At the age of 22, after experiencing a profound spiritual awakening during a retreat, Henriette felt a call to dedicate her life entirely to God. She envisioned a life not just of prayer, but also of active service in the community. This was a pivotal moment, leading her to found a religious congregation. In 1843, she established the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family, focused on the spiritual and educational formation of young women, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Under her leadership, the congregation grew steadily, expanding its reach to serve not only in France but also in other parts of the world. Henriette emphasized the importance of love in all aspects of life and encouraged her sisters to live out their faith in practical ways. She took the time to form deep personal relationships with the sisters and the girls they served, embodying her belief that each person is a unique creation in God's eyes.

Henriette encountered numerous challenges throughout her life, including opposition from those skeptical of her mission and the logistical struggles inherent in running an expanding religious community. Yet, she remained steadfast in her commitment to her calling, relying on prayer, community support, and her unwavering faith in God’s providence.

She faced significant health issues in her later years, yet she continued to serve actively until her health deteriorated in 1876. On July 17, 1876, surrounded by her fellow sisters, Henriette de Jésus passed away in peace. Her legacy of love and service left a lasting impact, inspiring countless women to follow in her footsteps.

In 1955, Henriette was beatified by Pope Pius XII, recognizing her virtuous life and work. Her example continues to resonate within the Church, particularly among those involved in educational and charitable work, reminding them of the power of faith and love in action. Today, she is remembered as a pioneer in women's education and an exemplar of compassionate service, encouraging all to see Christ in one another.
