Hubertus

St. Hubertus, also known as Hubert, was born around 656 in the region that would later become Belgium. He hailed from a noble family, which provided him with a privileged upbringing. Early on, he showcased a keen interest in the spiritual life, but his youthful years were marked by the pursuit of earthly pleasures and the courtly lifestyle typical of his status.

His life underwent a profound transformation after a personal tragedy. Legend holds that Hubert's wife died shortly after their marriage, which thrust him into deep mourning and prompted him to reevaluate his life's direction. Seeking solace and understanding, he retreated into the wilderness and spent time in prayer and reflection. During this period, a remarkable encounter with a majestic stag occurred; as the stag crossed his path, a crucifix was visible between its antlers. This encounter is widely interpreted as a divine sign, steering Hubertus toward a life dedicated to God.

Following this revelation, Hubertus began his journey back to the Church and was eventually ordained a priest. His strong faith and virtuous life caught the attention of the bishop of Maastricht, who recognized Hubertus' potential. In 708, he was appointed bishop of Liège, a significant role that put him in a position to influence the spiritual well-being of many.

Throughout his tenure as bishop, Hubertus was known for his deep commitment to pastoral care and evangelization. He established numerous monasteries and churches, thereby nurturing the faith within his community.
