Who they were
Isaac Jogues was born in Orleans, France, on January 10, 1607. He was raised in a devout family and entered the Society of Jesus in 1625. After his ordination as a priest in 1636, Jogues felt a calling to become a missionary, leading him to the New World where he would serve among the Huron people in present-day Canada.
Jogues arrived in Quebec in 1636 and soon began his work among the Hurons. His approach was characterized by love and respect for their culture, which allowed him to make substantial inroads in spreading the Christian faith. He endured numerous hardships during this time, including difficult weather conditions and language barriers, yet he remained steadfast in his mission.
In 1642, Jogues' life took a dire turn when he was captured by the Iroquois, who were at war with the Hurons. During his captivity, he endured horrific torture, which included being maimed and nearly killed. Remarkably, he managed to escape and returned to France, where he was celebrated as a martyr. However, his heart remained with the Native Americans, and he felt compelled to return to the mission field.
Back in the New World in 1643, Jogues resumed his missionary work, but his journey would be brief. He was soon recaptured by the Iroquois in 1646. This time, he would not escape. On October 18 of that year, he was martyred. His life tragically ended by torture, but his faith remained an indelible testament to his love for God and his mission.
Isaac Jogues is remembered for his courage in the face of adversity and his unwavering commitment to evangelization. His legacy is honored alongside other Jesuit martyrs, and he was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1930, becoming one of the patron saints of North America.
