James of Viterbo

James of Viterbo was born around 1255 in the Italian town of Viterbo. He entered the Order of Friars Minor, becoming a noted theologian and preacher. His deep commitment to the faith and remarkable eloquence in teaching soon distinguished him among his peers and drew attention from various church leaders.

In 1296, James was appointed Archbishop of Viterbo, a challenging role during a tumultuous time for the Church. His episcopacy coincided with significant political and ecclesiastical strife, particularly surrounding the papacy's relocation to Avignon. James demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the papacy and worked tirelessly to defend the Church's authority against burgeoning secular powers. One of the major challenges he faced as archbishop was the dispute over papal authority.
