Jean-Claude Colin

Jean-Claude Colin was born on August 7, 1790, in a small village in the Jura region of France. He grew up in a devoutly Catholic family, which deeply influenced his spiritual formation. From a young age, he showed a strong interest in the priesthood, attending a seminary and then being ordained a priest in 1816. He felt a call to serve the Church during a time of great challenges following the French Revolution, which had disrupted the Catholic community and left the country in spiritual disarray.

Colin was particularly drawn to the figure of the Virgin Mary, recognizing her essential role in the life of the Church. This devotion inspired him to found a new religious community dedicated to Mary, which he envisioned as a way to address the pressing needs of faith and education in post-Revolutionary France. In 1817, with the support of a few companions, he established the Society of Mary (Marist Fathers) in response to this calling. The society aimed to promote Marian spirituality and to provide educational outreach, particularly in regions that had been neglected.

Under his guidance, the Society sought to model its work on the characteristics of Mary—simplicity, humility, and service. Colin emphasized the importance of living out one’s faith through tangible acts of charity and care for the marginalized. His approach was pastoral, seeking to connect with people directly rather than imposing rigid structures. He believed that a community focused on Mary would foster a more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.

Colin faced many challenges in establishing the Society. Initial years were marked by struggles for acceptance in a variety of dioceses and by the need for more resources to support their mission. Nevertheless, his unwavering faith and commitment to Mary inspired many others to join this burgeoning community. By the end of his life, he had overseen the establishment of schools and missions in various parts of France and beyond.

In 1836, Colin was appointed the first superior of the Society of Mary and dedicated himself to the growth of the order. He traveled to various locations to encourage the Marist priests and guide their formation. His leadership was characterized by a blend of pastoral guidance and a deep spiritual life. By the time of his death on February 15, 1875, the Society of Mary had grown significantly and made notable contributions to education and pastoral care.

Colin’s legacy is evident today in the continued work of the Society of Mary, which has spread across the globe. The community remains dedicated to the mission of educating young people and serving those in need, keeping the Marian spirit at the center of their work. St. Jean-Claude Colin is remembered for his deep love for Mary, his commitment to education, and his enduring influence on the Church. His feast day is celebrated on November 15, a time for many to reflect on the importance of Mary's role in their lives and communities.
